Is it strange that I really want to go at it with a brush/chisel?

Same here. Such a satisfying feeling to clean really dirty/rusty parts and reassemble them

And this folks, is why you don’t roll coal.

Obviously not to this extent, but we had a Dodge on our lot for around 5-6 months. When you rearrange the lot (which is decently frequent if you’re selling cars) you leave a few idling and move them at a snails pace. They never really get hot, nor is there ever any real presure to push out the exhaust. This truck was in such a way that Iknew I had a customer coming in, and I ran out, started it, let it warm and then took it our from our lot onto the highway entrance and just opened it up.
The soot that poured out was amazing. It wasn’t coal-rolling, it was just built up from never going above idle.
When the customer came in, the car’s A/C was cold, the engine warm and nary a puff came from the exhaust. And this is why you always pull the car around for the customer while they enjoy a coffe/water at your desk.

EGR?

|
That’s a Volkswagen ALH, and rolling coal is unnecessary to get that. They’ll do that bone stock, thanks to the natural soot output and the EGR.
Take the intake manifold off and use a propane torch and compressed air to burn most of it off, then brush the rest out. Do that every few years.

It’s actually the intake manifold immediately after the EGR, but that’s the cause.
